Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common and potentially serious condition that affects the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. At Everest Dental, we are committed to helping you protect your oral health and prevent the progression of gum disease through comprehensive periodontal care and personalized treatment plans.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease occurs when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on the teeth and along the gumline. If not removed through proper oral hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus), which can irritate and inflame the gums, leading to gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more advanced stage of gum disease known as periodontitis, which can cause irreversible damage to the gums, bone, and supporting structures of the teeth.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum Redness and Swelling: Inflamed or swollen gums that appear red, tender, or bleed easily, especially when brushing or flossing. Gum Recession: The gums may recede or pull away from the teeth, exposing the roots and creating pockets where bacteria can accumulate. Persistent Bad Breath: Chronic bad breath (halitosis) that persists despite regular oral hygiene practices may be a sign of underlying gum disease. Gum Sensitivity or Pain: Gums that are sensitive to touch or painful when chewing or brushing may indicate gum disease. Loose or Shifting Teeth: Advanced gum disease can cause the teeth to become loose or shift out of position as the supporting structures of the teeth deteriorate.

Preventing Gum Disease

Prevention is key when it comes to gum disease. Practicing good oral hygiene habits is essential for maintaining healthy gums and preventing the onset of gum disease. This includes: Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing daily to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth and along the gumline. Using an antimicrobial mouthwash to help reduce plaque and bacteria. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limiting sugary snacks and beverages. Avoiding tobacco products, which can increase the risk of gum disease and other oral health problems.
